Ms Piali Ray, OBE is a successful Bengali artist, and is director of Sampad (‘success, accomplishment’), a British NGO that connects performing artists of South Asian origin, or those inspired by South Asian performing art, in the UK and beyond. Established under her leadership in 1990, Sampad has become one of the leading organizations that promotes South Asian art and heritage, as well as creating opportunities for South Asian art and artists to flourish and collaborate in Britain. The organization is well linked to other similar organisations at an international level. For her outstanding contribution to arts, Piali Ray has been awarded an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2002. She received also an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Central England in 2006, as well as the award for Outstanding Business Person of the Year by Birmingham Chamber of Commerce in 2009. One of important goals of CHIEF is to seek active participation of NGO’s in research on cultural heritage as a source of cultural literacy among young people. Piali Ray’s membership of the project’s International Advisory Board offers the benefit of collaboration with a leading NGO director in the UK, and her rich experiences in the process of preserving, as well as creating, cultural heritage.
