Work Package 1: Theoretical design and policy review

[Months: 1-12]

Lead: ASTON U
Partner Institutions: DU, PILAR, CRRC, MSGSU, UPF, UKBA, SPPU, HAW HAMBUR

Work Package1 will generate a knowledge base for all partners, which will be relevant to tailoring the various research designs within the project to their specific contexts. It will comprise two linked strands, which reflect CHIEF’s aim to make sense of the bidirectional relationship between the practices of educational policies in each partner country and their underlying assumptions. The first involves a critical synthesis of existing theoretical approaches to cultural literacy, cultural diversity and cultural interactions. This synthesis will be informed by postcolonial social scientific critiques of nation-states and the essentialising of cultural spaces (such as Europe). The second will apply this analysis systematically to official policies relating to the education of young Europeans, with a view to modelling potential strengths and weaknesses in existing approaches with reference to demographic changes associated with the processes of globalisation (immigration, super-diversity, transnational employment). This will involve documenting policies implemented at national and supra-national levels with respect to sharing knowledge about cultural formations, discourses and practices, and understanding them in relation to both their specific demographical contexts and increasing mobility (which correlates with increased cultural interactions). In addition, data collated on educational policies will provide a basis for delivering a comparative analysis (D1.4) across partner countries.
